Philips SH71 vs SH50: the Series 5000 trap

“Series 5000” is not enough information to order a replacement. Philips separates angular and older rounded designs.

The distinction that changes the purchase

Philips’ SH71/50 leaflet states compatibility with Series 7000 S7xxx and angular Series 5000 S5xxx, and excludes rounded Series 5000 designs, which it directs to SH50. This is why a seller title that says only “for Series 5000” is insufficient. A family name can span different generations. The head geometry is a useful warning signal, but the exact model manual remains the stronger check.

A documented example: S5887/10

The official S5887/10 specification leaflet explicitly names SH71 as its replacement head. This gives a specific manufacturer-supported route for that model. It does not establish that every product labelled S5000 takes SH71 or that another cartridge is an upgrade. Keep the full model code when searching the parts catalogue and compare it with the replacement pack description.

Identify your handle before examining the shop photograph

Copy the code from the handle, original box or manual. Open the manufacturer’s support material for that code and locate the replacement-head entry. Then compare the part number on the shop listing. If the manual and listing disagree, ask the manufacturer or seller for a model-specific confirmation before opening a hygiene-sealed package. Do not decide solely from a photograph of three circular cutters.

Check what the replacement pack contains

A set of replacement cutters is not necessarily an entire top housing, retaining-ring set or complete head assembly. Read the included-parts description. If the damage is a broken hinge or missing ring, buying cutters alone may not solve it. This is particularly important when a marketplace seller uses the same image for several replacement options.

Do not mix up a calendar recommendation with a diagnosis

The S5887/10 leaflet gives Philips’ two-year head replacement recommendation. That is not a guarantee of two years of identical performance, nor proof that a specific problem is caused by worn heads. First check correct assembly and the model’s cleaning instructions. Damaged cutting surfaces call for stopping use and obtaining the correct part rather than pressing harder.

What we can and cannot confirm

We checked manufacturer documentation, not physical fit, current UK stock or third-party manufacturing quality. No alternative-head upgrade claim is made. If you cannot resolve the exact handle, use the official support route and keep the purchase on hold. A wrong head is an avoidable cost even if its sticker price is lower.
