Choose a beard trimmer by the length you actually keep

Start with the beard you want tomorrow morning. A box full of attachments is only useful if the right comb is in it.

Write down your working length

A short-stubble routine and a fuller beard create different requirements. Check the lowest guarded setting, the longest comb and the gaps between settings. The minimum bare-blade figure is not a promise of the same finish as a razor. If you currently ask a barber for a particular length, use that as a starting reference rather than guessing from a product photograph.

Read the increments, not just the setting count

A large number of settings can hide uneven steps across the range. Philips’ BT5515/15 leaflet lists a 0.4–20 mm range, 40 settings and precision from 0.2 mm. “From” matters: do not assume every step through the longest setting is 0.2 mm. Its UK parts list separates the short comb and the 10.4–20 mm comb. Verify the exact kit and comb before choosing it for a particular length.

Decide what you need around the beard

A guarded trimmer controls retained hair length. Clearing the neck or shaving the cheeks smooth is a separate job. You might keep a working razor for those areas and buy only a trimmer. A hybrid such as OneBlade offers another approach to edging and shaving, but that does not establish that its comb range suits a longer beard. Avoid paying for an all-in-one kit merely because it has more named functions.

Battery figures are scheduling information

Manufacturer runtime is not our measured cutting endurance. BT5515/15 documentation lists 90 minutes after a one-hour charge; QP2724/20 documentation lists 45 minutes after eight hours. The practical question is whether you remember to charge overnight, need a quick top-up, or require an explicitly supported corded mode. Never assume wet-use equipment can run while plugged in.

Check the cost of a broken comb

Before ordering, find the exact replacement comb and cutter in the manufacturer’s parts catalogue. A sound handle with a lost comb can be worth keeping. Add the current delivered price of likely spares to your comparison, but do not treat a self-sharpening claim as an unlimited lifespan or availability guarantee. Check the seller, delivery, included charger and return conditions for opened grooming goods.

A useful final shortlist

Keep only tools that cover your chosen length, offer a workable charging routine and have identifiable spares. Then compare total delivered cost and the functions you will use weekly. We have not tested cutting evenness, motor strength, noise or grip; a specification comparison cannot settle those questions. Read independent testing for those observations and keep its exact model number in view.
